New clubs must 'get competitive'

BROWNLOW Medallist Gerard Healy has urged the two expansion clubs to get aggressive at the trade table this year in a bid to instantly rise up the ladder.

Healy said Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney needed to become competitive and the golden ticket to increasing their win tallies was to secure experienced and bigger bodies from rival clubs.

"(They need to say) it doesn't matter who it is, just give us one of your talls," Healy said on Fox Footy's On The Couch.

"The Bombers desperately need a runner and if they have to give away a draft pick and one of their gun midfielders, so be it.

"They need to get some bigger bodies. They could get (Jeremy) Cameron back to centre half-forward, which fills that hole, they've got (Jon) Patton out for another 12 months, they need another big body up forward."

The Giants' forward structure of the future is built around Cameron and Patton, and with the latter rupturing his ACL last week they brought back Setanta O'hAilpin against the Dees, who kicked five goals.

The Suns are yet to find a consistent avenue to goal, with tall timber prized draft picks Tom Lynch and Daniel Gorringe currently in the reserves and Sam Day and Charlie Dixon still light on for experience.

"(Kurt) Tippett got away from the Gold Coast, they need another big body. They've been stiff too because Nathan Bock's been (injured)," Healy said.

"Forget this illusionary premiership, get competitive. If Gary Ablett gets taken out of the business, they get taken out of the business, they're very much a one-trick pony."

Healy said securing a marquee big body could help the kids "go ahead exponentially".

The Giants have flagged an interest in free agent Lance Franklin, but president Dave Matthews said they were yet to table an offer.
