Menzel vows to fight for career

LUCKLESS Geelong forward Daniel Menzel has vowed to fight for his career after confirmation he faces a fourth knee reconstruction inside two years.

Menzel's worst fears were realised yesterday when scans showed he had ruptured the LARS-reconstructed left knee when playing for the Cats' VFL team on Saturday.

Cats physio Mike Snelling said yesterday Menzel had "snapped the graft up near its insertion".

The 21-year-old desperately wants to play on and said he had no choice but to steel himself for another round of rehabilitation.

"That's all I can do, I guess," he said. "That's what you love doing, playing footy, so I've got to see how it turns out and then we'll approach it as we can."

Menzel is believed to be entering uncharted territory as the first league footballer to have a fourth knee reconstruction.

Players who had three knee reconstructions include Hawthorn ruckman Max Bailey, former Melbourne forward David Schwarz and ex-Collingwood player Lee Walker.

Menzel, contracted for 2014, has now wrecked his left knee three times.

He had conventional surgery in June last year, then had synthetic ligament LARS surgery in December after he re-injured it at training.

Menzel was playing only his second comeback match on Saturday.

Snelling said the club would know by the end of the week what type of reconstructive surgery Menzel would have.

"He felt an immediate pop and some pain and he was pretty adamant that he had done some damage," Snelling told Geelong's website.

"Now the trick is we've all got to get our heads together and think about the future for Dan's knee, what's best for his knee. We're going to go through every single possibility we can and leave no stone unturned."

Menzel spoke of his feelings after his knee again blew out when he pivoted against Box Hill.

"Just, 'Not again', I guess," Menzel said of his initial reaction. "Shattered that I'd possibly done the same thing again, which when you put in so much work and so much effort it's hard to believe that it could happen again."
